WIOA Becomes Law

President Barack Obama signed the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) into law on July 22, 2014. The Act goes into effect July 1, 2015, and contains new provisions for Adult Education as part of a comprehensive national employment/education/training strategy. The Departments of Labor, Education, and HHS are working together to help providers implement the interrelated titles of WIOA.

The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) is a bipartisan, bicameral bill that amends and reauthorizes the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (WIA) through fiscal year 2020.

LVR Celebrates 50th Anniversary Luncheon

LVR LuncheonOn a perfect Spring Afternoon 160 people came together to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Literacy Volunteers of Rochester.

Ruth J. Colvin, who is 97 years old and the Founder of Literacy Volunteers of America shared some stories and inspired the audience….but that’s NOT all.  She met and greeted tutors and students, spent time with County Executive Maggie Brooks and posed for pictures!  This tiny lady was a power house and we were pleased to present the inaugural Ruth J. Colvin Founders award to her, as well as to Church Women United, and Rose-Marie Klipstein who shared her own 40+ years of history with an enraptured audience.

Bernard Brown, a current LVR student shared his moving story and thanked LVR for helping him and delivered his remarks to a standing ovation. In addition to the County Executive, Senator Joseph Robach, Assemblyman Harry Bronson and representatives from Assemblyman Gannt’s office brought proclamations and citations on behalf of NYS to honor Literacy Volunteers.
