NYACCE Honors Local Student

The New York Association for Continuing/Community Education (NYACCE) honored Rochester Rochester Educational Opportunity Center’s Jahaira Cortes at its 33rd annual Student of the Year Awards Dinner in Albany on October 25. Jahaira, seen here with State Senator Joe Robach, completed the Medical Secretary Certificate Program despite numerous personal challenges. NYACCE, a professional organization which promotes continuing and community education in New York State, recognized 21 outstanding students from agencies that provide lifelong educational opportunities to adults.

Fewer New Yorkers Passing the TASC

The Center for an Urban Future has reported that after the New York State Department of Education switched from the GED to a new high school equivalency exam, TASC, in 2014, the number of New York adults taking and passing the high school equivalency (HSE) exam has declined. NCFL Creates Learn to Earn Toolkit

The National Center for Families Learning has created a new resource for adults working to increase their employability skills. The Learn to Earn Toolkit addresses in-demand employability skills, including critical thinking, English language, oral and written communication, and professionalism.

RCSD’s Literacy Zone to Hold Career Fair

The Rochester City School District’s Northeast Literacy Zone will host a Career Fair for Rochester residents on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at the Office of Adult and Career Education Services campus at 30 Hart Street, Rochester from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

The Career Fair will provide a pathway out of poverty for individuals and families living in the Rochester NE Literacy Zone. The Office of Adult Career and Educational Services’ (OACES) Literacy Zone focuses on meeting the literacy education and entry level employment and training needs of the Rochester community. Other organizations partner to provide a variety of supports to Literacy Zone participants.
