The U. S. Department of Education, Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE), is presenting a professional development model for adult basic education mathematics teachers. This new model, Adult Numeracy Instruction - Professional Development (ANI-PD), will involve practitioners from 10 adult education programs in an intensive, year-long professional development program aimed at improving math instruction in adult basic education and high school equivalency preparation education.
The ANI-PD model is built upon the principle that teacher preparation for adult mathematics instruction must be sufficiently intensive and focused on providing instructors with a strong base of mathematics content and pedagogical knowledge.
ANI-PD Goals include:
Participants will work with Adult Education Learning Standards and the Common Core State Standards and focus on four strategic instructional practices. This institute will concentrate on the content strands of Number and Operations Sense (Integers) and Algebra. Teachers will continue to utilize a toolkit comprised of print materials, binders, texts and manipulatives.
