This training is for staff of ACCES-AEPP funded programs only. All other programs are to contact the Finger Lakes RAEN Director for more information.

TABE is a series of Tests of Adult Basic Education in reading, mathematics, and language at all levels. The test is designed to assess skills in the contexts that are most important to adults: life skills, work, and education. TABE provides both norm-referenced and competency-based information to help you evaluate your student’s abilities and plan for individual education and training needs. Adult literacy programs, funded by the ACCES/NYS Education Department, use TABE to place students in adult basic education (ABE) classes and to measure educational gain.

Highlights of this recently revised session include an overview of the test and scoring tables, effective test administration and appropriate use of test levels, ACCES/NYSED policies for using the test, using TABE scores as a diagnostic tool for placement and as a road map for instruction, and a discussion of the relationship among TABE test scores, class placement, and outcome reporting.

This training will provide staff members that assess the literacy skills of adults with certification to administer the TABE. Staffs who administer the TABE must successfully complete this training at least every three years. Participants need to attend the entire training to qualify for certification.

Participants should familiarize themselves with TABE, Complete Battery, Test Directions, pages 1-16, 19-32, 81-93, 113-116 prior to attending this training.

Participants should bring one test booklet each from either Form 9 or 10 for Levels E, M. and D as well as a Locator test. A participant from each program attending should also bring a TABE norming book, the Test Directions book and an answer sheet to share.
