Strengthening Writing Instruction for Today's Adult Learners (9:30am – 12:00pm)

In this session, teachers will learn strategies and techniques that they can use to help students become more effective writers - not only for testing purposes but also for the workplace and higher education. Today's adult students spend the majority of their time in class working on basic grammar skills and learning to write a 5-paragraph essay. However, writing in real-life (whether in the workplace or higher education/training) requires that students construct responses that are cohesive, organized, and supported by facts, examples, and evidence.

Building Students' Mathematical Problem Solving Skills (1:00pm – 3:00pm)

In this session, teachers will learn strategies and techniques that they can use to help students become more effective problem-solvers. Much of the instruction in adult education mathematics classes focuses on basic algorithms. While students can then compute using basic operations, they often are unable to understand how to apply these computation skills in real-world problems.

In both sessions, teachers will have an opportunity to practice the strategies and activities presented and will receive resource materials for use in the classroom.
