Congratulations to NYACCE Students of the Year 2017!

Musa Sabriye and Ismail Mohamed, adult students at the Office of Adult and Career Education Services (OACES), Rochester City School District, will be recognized as Outstanding Adult Student Award Recipients for 2017 by the New York Association for Continuing Community Education (NYACCE) at its 34th Annual Student Awards Ceremony on October 17, 2017.

Musa Sabriye, a refugee from Somalia, experienced multiple hardships as a result of the conflicts occurring in that country. With limited English Musa enrolled at OACES in September 2015. He has worked hard to learn the culture, the language, and most importantly Workforce Preparation skills. He is currently employed in Environmental Services at Strong Memorial Hospital. Musa’s English skills have dramatically increased through his current studies at OACES for his High School Equivalency diploma.

Ismael Mohamed, a refugee who originally came from Darfur, Sudan, had no formal education until enrolling at OACES.   A major challenge for Ismail is that his English is at a high level, but he cannot read or write. Despite this barrier, he has worked at Wegmans for two years.  His goal is to one day work for the City of Rochester as a refuse worker and purchase a home.

Both adult learners have overcome great adversities, demonstrate perseverance, and are strong role models for their families.
